Music

The importance of music both vocally and instrumentally has a very strong emphasis at Ilam. All children have the opportunity to be auditioned for a choir and orchestra. There are three choirs, one for each area of the school. Choirs and the orchestra practise for 45 minutes weekly and have regular opportunities to perform at assemblies and other school functions.

The senior choir’s performance at the North West Music Festival is one of the highlights of the year as is the choir’s involvement in the Christchurch Schools’ Music Festival. Children are also given the opportunity to audition for the many vocal and instrumental special groups formed each year for this festival.

We are fortunate to have a number of itinerant music tutors who offer individual tuition on a variety of musical instruments and this service is advertised through our school newsletter. Consequently the senior orchestra consists of children who have a high level of skill in a wide range of orchestral instruments including strings, woodwind, brass and percussion. Young children at Ilam have high aspirations to be involved in our music groups.
